You're Washing Your Hair Wrong (And It Shows)

5 min read·By Roots Studio

Most people think they know how to wash their hair. Then they walk into my chair, and I can tell within seconds: you're doing it wrong.

I'm not saying this to be mean. I'm saying it because I care. And because every single day, I see beautiful, intelligent women damaging their hair in the shower without even knowing it.

So let's talk about it. Honestly.

You're Using Too Much Shampoo

I see you. Squirting that dollar-sized amount into your palm like it's body wash.

Here's the truth: You only need a quarter-sized amount. Maybe less if you have fine hair.

Shampoo is concentrated. It's designed to spread. When you use too much, you're stripping your scalp of natural oils it actually needs. Then your scalp overcompensates by producing more oil. And then you wash it more. And then it gets worse.

See the cycle?

You're Scrubbing Your Scalp Like It's a Dirty Pan

Stop. Just... stop.

Your scalp is not a countertop. It's skin. Delicate skin. When you scrub aggressively, you're irritating it, creating micro-tears, and potentially causing inflammation.

The right way: Use your fingertips (not your nails) and massage gently in circular motions. Think spa treatment, not dishwashing.

You're Putting Conditioner on Your Roots

Why? Why are you doing this?

Conditioner is for your lengths and ends — the parts that are older, drier, and need moisture. Your roots? They're fresh. They have natural oils. They don't need heavy conditioner weighing them down.

Apply from mid-length to ends. That's it. That's the rule.

You're Rinsing with Hot Water

I know it feels good. I know it's relaxing. But hot water opens your hair cuticles and makes them rough. It also strips moisture.

Finish with cool water. Yes, it's uncomfortable for 10 seconds. But it seals the cuticle, adds shine, and locks in moisture.

You'll thank me later.

You're Washing Too Often (Or Not Enough)

This one's tricky because it depends on your hair type.

But generally:

- Fine or oily hair: Every other day or every day is fine.

- Normal to thick hair: 2-3 times a week.

- Curly or textured hair: 1-2 times a week max.

Your hair will adjust. Give it two weeks, and it'll regulate.

Look, I get it. We've been washing our hair a certain way our whole lives. It's muscle memory.

But if you want better hair — shinier, healthier, stronger hair — you need to unlearn some habits.

I promise, these small changes make a massive difference.
